OVER the ICE


was the option chosen by twelve of the eighteen churches in Greenland.  All four churches in the Northern Settlement and eight of fourteen churches in the Eastern Settlement decided to walk over the Ice.

There is testimony in the Icelandic records that some Lenape stayed behind in Greenland until after 1410.  The last Lenape Big House celebration in Oklahoma in the 1920s had twelve masks hanging on the walls.  One mask may have been for each Greenland church.

The heads with the father, Son, and Holy Ghost hair-dos are in the correct orientation to represent the Northern and Eastern Settlements if the composer was looking north.

But the two lands, Greenland and America, are represented with the Lenape convention of the land on the left being the FROM land and the land on the RIGHT being the TO land.  So the people symbols are located correctly.  They were still on the FROM land.

The two parallel lines over the ocean represent the ice.  With 24 syllables and a simple sketch, the Lenape historian of 660 years ago told us that those of the North and those of the East walked over the

So, the Lenape recorded that they had a “Northern” settlement and an “Eastern” Settlement.
